Manufacturing Process of Palm Leaf Plates with Fallen Leaves

Is there anyone who has not heard about environmental activist Greta Thunberg? Well, the answer to this question is most definitely ‘No’. She is well-known for her environmental awareness activities around the world. One such small moment changed the perspective of many people in the world, they became more environmentally aware of the products they use and how it affects the environment.

We aim to make a conscious effort to make our community and planet a better and greener place by using sustainable raw materials to make eco-friendly, compostable, and biodegradable products. Tableware and cutlery are often used by each and everyone daily. It amounts to extensive plastic waste, especially from events and weddings.

At Conservia, we use dried fallen palm leaves, one of the best forms of sustainable raw materials to manufacture Ecodyne tableware. The manufacturing process of palm leaf plates is the easiest and cheapest, but the actual expense of the product depends on the finishing and drying of the product.

Here is a small glimpse of how the manufacturing process is carried out for making disposable leaf plates:

  • Fallen Leaves - Palm leaves of an adult tree dry naturally and fall on the ground, about 8-10 leaves annually. This shedding starts in October and ends in May. About 32 billion leaves are available in Karnataka in a year from just 7 districts.

  • Community Sourcing - The sheath of these fallen fronds are cut for bundling and they are then transported. Community sourcing takes place by inbound sourcing of leaf stock from the farming community of over 900 families. This consists of about 45% of Consrvia’s leaf stock.

  • Direct Sourcing - The remaining 55% of Conservia’s leaf stock is through outbound direct sourcing from 4 major districts of Karnataka.

  • Processing of Fallen Palm Leaf: Grading and Sun Drying - Conservia stocks approximately over 30 million premium leaves each season. All these leaves are graded and then sold off. Leaves are also sun-dried before they are bundled for stockings.

  • Storage - This premium quality is fallen and sun-dried leaves are stored for uninterrupted supply throughout the year.

  • Hydro Pressure Washing - The leaves are washed under high pressure to remove any small sand particles and induce moisture in them.

  • Resting and Pressing - Washed leaves are left for about 7 hours to soften so that it is easy to shape them. These leaves are then pressed and molded dried before into tableware using heated stainless steel dyes.

  • Air Cleaning and Inspection - Heating works as a form of sterilization. Compressed air cleaning and quality inspection are done to remove any residual matter from the plates.

  • Sterilization, Sealing, and Packing - UV radiation sterilization is done to neutralize any microorganisms before undergoing a final quality inspection. After inspection, the products are packed with proper carton sealing and stickering.

This is how our Ecodyne Tableware Products are manufactured and packed in utmost hygienic and sterile conditions to avoid any contamination. We have a wide range of areca leaf products such as plates and bowls of different shapes and sizes. These can be used as main course plates, dessert bowls, and plates, salad bowls, etc for various events. Our customers also order platter plates from us for dinner parties and lunch buffets.
