MATERIALS & SCIENCE · RIM PROFILES

What is the difference between Classic and Standard palm leaf plates?

The rim. Classic plates have a flat profile and a 3 mm rim, made for dry food such as canapés, sushi and cake. Standard plates have a raised base and a 5 mm rim that holds curry, pasta and dressed salad. Material, process and food-contact testing are the same, and neither line is a higher grade.

For buyers reading an Ecodyne quote for the first time and deciding which line goes into the container.

Quick facts

  • Classic: 3 mm rim, 2.0 cm deep, flat base, for dry and cold food.
  • Standard: 5 mm rim, 2.5 to 3.0 cm deep, raised base, for wet and hot main courses.
  • A 6 inch round weighs 8 to 12 g in Classic and 12 to 16 g in Standard.
  • Quality grade (Economy or Premium) is a separate choice from the rim line.
  • Both lines can be mixed in one container.

Is Classic or Standard the better quality?

Neither, and this is the point buyers most often get wrong. They are two shapes for two kinds of food, pressed from the same fallen areca leaf at 200°C, dried for 24 hours at 60°C and tested the same way.

Quality is graded separately and on appearance only: colour and surface finish. For export we quote Economy and Premium grades, and you can have either grade in either rim line. So a quote line always carries two choices, the line and the grade. Ask about both before you compare prices.

Which line should I order for wet food and which for dry food?

Classic Standard
Rim 3 mm 5 mm
Plate depth 2.0 cm 2.5 to 3.0 cm
Profile Flat base, low tapered rim Raised base, upright rim
Made for Canapés, sushi, charcuterie, cheese, dry starters, cake and dessert Curry, pasta, rice dishes, dressed salads, sauced mains
Typical buyers Event and wedding caterers, fine dining, retail packs of small plates Restaurants serving mains, delivery kitchens, canteens, hospitals, schools
Weight, 6 inch round 8 to 12 g 12 to 16 g
Microwave 3 to 4 minutes 3 to 4 minutes

A quick test: if the food would run off a dinner plate tilted slightly, it needs Standard. If you would serve it on a wooden board, Classic will do. For a menu with both, order both.

Which sizes come in each line?

The two lines overlap in the common round sizes and split elsewhere. Small squares and the rimless 9 inch square are Classic. The 12 inch round, the rectangles and the oval plate are Standard.

Shape Classic sizes Standard sizes
Round 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 inch 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12 inch
Square 4, 6, 7, 8, 9 (rimless), 10 inch 7, 9.5 (deep), 10 inch
Rectangle none 9 × 6 and 6 × 4 inch
Oval none 20 × 15 cm
Heart 6 inch 6 inch

Measured sizes in centimetres for every plate are in our palm leaf plate size chart, and carton data is on the palm leaf plates product page.

Does the rim depth change weight, stacking and container count?

Yes, a little, and it is worth knowing before you plan a load. The 5 mm rim adds leaf and depth. So a Standard plate weighs more than a Classic plate of the same diameter and stacks slightly looser.

In practice that means a container heavy in Standard plates carries a few fewer pieces than one heavy in Classic. A 40ft high cube takes 300,000 to 350,000 pieces in a normal mix either way. We work out cartons and CBM for your exact mix on the quote, and you can try mixes yourself in the container calculator.

Do other suppliers use the same names?

No, and do not assume they do. Indian palm leaf makers have no shared naming. One supplier’s “Classic” may be a grade, another’s may be a shape, and some sell one mixed output with no split at all.

Compare suppliers in numbers instead. Ask each one for rim depth in millimetres, weight per piece in grams, measured size in centimetres and pieces per carton, for every item on the quote. A supplier who cannot give you those figures has not measured them. More questions worth asking are in what to ask a palm leaf supplier.

Can I mix Classic and Standard in one container?

Yes, at no extra charge. Many distributors do exactly that: Classic for event and retail customers, Standard for restaurants and caterers, in one shipment.

The minimum order is one 20ft container for the Ecodyne Tableware brand, or one 40ft high cube for white label. Inside it, each product category needs at least 200 cartons. We load within 10 days of the confirmed order, FOB New Mangalore Port, with a 1% penalty for each day we are late.

Questions buyers ask

Are Classic and Standard plates equally food-safe?

Yes. Both are one pressed areca leaf with no glue, coating or chemicals added. Both lines are tested to LFGB standards and confirmed compliant, and both are EN 13432 tested and passed. We send the test reports on request. The only physical difference is the shape of the rim.

Is Standard more expensive than Classic?

Price moves more with grade than with rim line. Round plates sit in a band of USD 0.032 to 0.117 per piece and square plates USD 0.036 to 0.100, FOB New Mangalore, from Economy to Premium. Where an item lands depends on grade, size, line and packing, so we price the whole container mix together.

Which line is better for food delivery?

Standard. The 5 mm rim keeps sauce on the plate when a box is carried or tilted, and the 8 and 10 inch Standard plates are the usual delivery sizes. The 10 inch Standard square fits rectangular delivery boxes neatly. Classic plates work for dry delivery items such as sandwiches, wraps and baked goods.

Can I get samples of both lines before I order?

Yes. Samples are free and you pay only the courier cost. I would ask for the same size in both lines and serve your real menu on them, hot and wet dishes included. Half an hour of that tells you more than any spec sheet.

Does a deeper rim make the plate stronger?

It makes the plate hold liquid better, and the raised base gives it a slightly firmer feel in the hand. Both lines are pressed from the same dense leaf at the same temperature, and both come out rigid. Choose by the food, not by strength.
