INDUSTRY REPORT 2026 · MANUFACTURING
How much palm leaf plate manufacturing capacity does India have?
By our estimate India has about 80 to 120 million plates a month of installed palm leaf plate capacity. Most of it is small cottage units that work only from October to May. No government or trade body publishes a figure, so ours is triangulated. About 80% of output comes from seven Karnataka districts.
For importers sizing a supplier, and for anyone trying to understand how the Indian palm leaf plate industry is built.
Quick facts
- Installed capacity: about 80 to 120 million plates a month (our estimate), mostly seasonal cottage capacity.
- Seven Karnataka districts make roughly 80% of national output (our estimate).
- Five tiers of producers. Five to seven large exporters make about half of organised export volume (our estimate).
- Combined demand peaks at about 2.5 times its monsoon low (our estimate).
- Ecodyne: about 4.5 million pieces a month from 90+ pressing units feeding a 20,000 sq ft hub in Bhadravathi.
How are palm leaf plates made?
In eight steps, and the only things added to the leaf are heat and pressure. There is no glue, coating, binder, dye or chemical at any stage.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Collect | Fallen areca sheaths are picked up from farms |
| 2. Grade | Sorted by size and condition; large clean sheaths go to big plates and platters |
| 3. Wash | Cleaned with water |
| 4. Soak | Softened so the leaf can be shaped |
| 5. Heat-press | Pressed at about 200°C, which forms the plate and sterilises it |
| 6. Dry | About 24 hours at around 60°C to set the moisture content |
| 7. UV treatment | A final sterilisation step |
| 8. Inspect and pack | Checked, packed and loaded floor to roof in the container |
The pressing temperature matters more than any other step. Our page on why we press at 200°C covers that step in more detail.
Where are palm leaf plates made in India?
Mostly in Karnataka. By our estimate seven districts make about 80% of national output: Shivamogga, Davangere, Chikmagalur, Tumkur, Dakshina Kannada, Chitradurga and Uttara Kannada. A smaller export cluster sits in Tamil Nadu, around Coimbatore, Madurai and Tiruppur.
Among the bigger exporters we see three ways of working. Some press, check and export entirely within Karnataka, close to the leaf. Some press in Karnataka but pack and ship from Chennai. Others are based in Tamil Nadu and buy pressed plates from contract units in Karnataka, then finish, certify and export from Tamil Nadu. All three can work at scale. The difference a buyer feels is in lead time, and in how much control the exporter has over pressing.
How is the Indian palm leaf plate industry structured?
In five tiers, and very unevenly. At the top it is fairly concentrated. By shipment count, the top three exporters handle about 46% of exports. At the bottom it is a scatter of village units nobody counts.
| Tier | Who | Share of volume (our estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | About five to seven export-integrated manufacturers, each above two million plates a month, with several international certifications, shipping to fifteen or more countries | About half of organised export volume |
| Tier 1B | A small group of large producers focused on the Indian market | 10 to 15% |
| Tier 2 | Fifteen to twenty-five mid-sized organised manufacturers with partial certification | About 25% |
| Tier 3 | Fifty to one hundred small organised exporters | About 10% |
| Tier 4 | Cottage and informal units selling for cash in the home market | Not measurable; invisible to customs and GST records |
For an importer the useful question is which tier a supplier really sits in. A trader buying from Tier 3 and Tier 4 units can look like a Tier 1 manufacturer on a website. Ask for the audit and the address where the plates are pressed.
Why is installed capacity so much higher than output?
Because the industry is built for a seasonal peak. Indian demand follows the wedding, festival and religious calendar from October to May and falls close to zero during the June to September monsoon. Export demand is steady all year. Put together, demand at the peak is about 2.5 times the low, by our estimate.
Capacity is sized for that peak, so for months at a time a large part of it sits idle, mostly in the cottage tier. Organised exporters run at moderate to high utilisation in season and steadier levels year round, because their export orders do not stop for the monsoon. Leading exporters also build finished stock through the off-season to keep loading dates.
The 80 to 120 million range is wide on purpose. Cottage capacity is not recorded anywhere, and we would rather show the uncertainty than hide it. The working is on the Industry Report 2026 methodology page.
How did the 2025-26 shocks change palm leaf plate manufacturing?
They pushed share towards the organised export tier. The Indian home market went through a reset and settled smaller, at a registered value of about 55.6 million US dollars by our estimate, which is a floor because much cottage trade is unrecorded. Separately, US duties of up to 50% cut demand in what had been the largest export market.
The shocks did not fall evenly. Exporters with European buyers, test reports in hand and stock on the floor could move volume. Several that depended on one exposed market paused production. In my reading the industry leaving FY 2025-26 is more export-weighted at the top and more concentrated than it was in 2019, and the reason is capability, not favouritism. Certification, channels and stock are what the new market pays for, and they sit mostly with the larger exporters.
Where does Ecodyne sit in this picture?
In Tier 1. Ecodyne Tableware, part of Conservia Partners, was founded in 2009 and has exported since 2010. We are India’s largest manufacturer and exporter of areca leaf tableware, shipping to 19 countries.
Our production runs across more than 90 distributed pressing units, about 200,000 sq ft in total, which feed a 20,000 sq ft solar-powered hub in Bhadravathi, Karnataka. Capacity is about 4.5 million pieces a month. We are ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified by TÜV India and amfori BSCI audited. The breakdown is on our production capacity page.
Questions buyers ask
What are the stages of palm leaf plate manufacturing?
Eight: collect the fallen sheaths, grade them, wash, soak to soften, heat-press at about 200°C, dry for about 24 hours at around 60°C, give a UV treatment, then inspect and pack for loading. Nothing is added to the leaf except heat and pressure.
How many palm leaf plate manufacturers are there in India?
Nobody has an exact count. By our estimate there are about five to seven large export manufacturers, a few large domestic producers, fifteen to twenty-five mid-sized organised firms and fifty to one hundred small exporters. Below them sits a cottage tier that is the most numerous and is not recorded anywhere.
Why do palm leaf plate factories build stock before the monsoon?
Because leaf collection and drying get much harder from June to September, while export orders keep coming. Exporters who carry finished stock through the rains can still load containers on time. Those who do not often push loading dates back by weeks.
How can I tell a manufacturer from a trader?
Ask where the plates are pressed and visit or audit that address. Ask for the BSCI audit and the ISO certificates, and check that the company named on them is the one quoting you. A trader is not always a bad choice, but you should know which one you are dealing with.
Is cottage-made palm leaf tableware exported?
Rarely directly. Cottage units mostly sell for cash in the Indian market and hold no export certifications. Some of their output reaches export through traders, so if you buy from a trader, ask where each container was pressed.
