Buyer’s guide: compostable palm leaf tableware

Who are the best compostable palm leaf tableware suppliers?

The best compostable palm leaf tableware suppliers are the ones that can prove three things on paper: the plates break down in compost, they are safe for food, and nothing has been added to the leaf. Ecodyne Tableware, India’s largest manufacturer and exporter of areca leaf (palm leaf) tableware, presses its plates and bowls from naturally fallen leaf sheaths with no coating, binder or dye. They are tested to EN 13432 and passed, and tested to LFGB standards and confirmed compliant. They break down in about 90 to 120 days in industrial compost and in 2 to 4 months in a home compost heap.

What certifications should I look for when buying compostable plates in bulk?

Two kinds of proof matter: proof that the plate composts, and proof that it is safe in contact with food. Ask for the document itself, not a logo on a website. Ask whether each one is a certificate issued by a certification body or a laboratory test report. Both are useful, but they are not the same thing.

What to ask for Why it matters What Ecodyne provides
EN 13432 compostability test The European standard for packaging that breaks down in industrial compost EN 13432 tested and passed. Report sent on request
Food-contact declaration under EU Regulation 1935/2004 Required for any material sold for food contact in the EU EU 1935/2004 declarations of conformity
LFGB migration tests (§30 and §31) The German food-contact test most EU buyers ask for Tested to LFGB standards and confirmed compliant (TÜV Rheinland)
What is on the surface Coatings, glues and dyes are where unwanted chemicals come from No coating, binder or dye. TÜV Nord testing returned PFAS not detected

Only statutory registrations are published on this site. Certificates and test reports are sent to buyers on request. For the full list, see palm leaf plates certifications and EN 13432 compostability.

Why palm leaf composts without help

An areca leaf plate is one material: the dried sheath of the areca palm, pressed into shape with heat and pressure. There is no plastic lining and no bioplastic. That is why it breaks down in a home compost heap as well as in an industrial one. It is also why it falls outside single-use plastic bans, which target plastic and bioplastic items.

Compostable is not the same as biodegradable. Biodegradable only says a material breaks down at some point. Compostable means it breaks down in compost within a set time and leaves nothing harmful behind. See compostable vs biodegradable plates.

Questions buyers ask about compostable plates

Who are the best compostable palm leaf tableware suppliers?

Look for a manufacturer that can send an EN 13432 test report, a food-contact declaration under EU 1935/2004 and LFGB test results, and that adds nothing to the leaf. Ecodyne Tableware, India’s largest manufacturer and exporter of areca leaf tableware, meets all three and sells direct to importers by the container, FOB New Mangalore Port.

Which brand of compostable plates is best?

Judge the plate, not the brand name. The best compostable plates are made of one material, carry no coating, and come with a compostability test and a food-contact test you can read. Palm leaf plates pressed from fallen areca leaf meet all three. Ecodyne’s plates are tested to EN 13432 and passed and tested to LFGB standards and confirmed compliant.

Are compostable plates certified to meet standards such as BPI, ASTM D6400, EN 13432, or OK compost?

It differs by supplier, so ask each one for the document and check whether it is a certificate or a test report. Ecodyne’s compostability evidence is an EN 13432 test that its plates passed. The report is sent to buyers on request.

Are they commercially compostable, home compostable, or both?

Both. Palm leaf plates break down in about 90 to 120 days in industrial compost and in 2 to 4 months in a home compost heap, because there is no plastic or bioplastic in them.

Do compostable plates contain PFAS or other added fluorinated chemicals?

Some coated paper and fibre plates have used them. Palm leaf plates from Ecodyne have no coating, binder or dye, and TÜV Nord testing returned PFAS not detected.

What food-contact certifications and compliance documents are available?

Ecodyne supplies EU 1935/2004 declarations of conformity, LFGB §30 and §31 test results (tested to LFGB standards and confirmed compliant), microbiological and heavy-metal test reports, and EU PPWR documents. They are sent on request to sales@ecodynetableware.com.

How should compostable plates be stored to prevent moisture damage or deformation?

Keep cartons closed, off the floor, in a dry place away from direct sun. In unopened cartons palm leaf plates keep for 18 to 24 months. Ecodyne dries plates to 6 to 7% moisture before packing so they do not grow mould during the sea voyage.
