Verpackungsgesetz (VerpackG)

Verpackungsgesetz (VerpackG) is Germany’s Packaging Act, requiring producers and importers acting as producers to register with the LUCID register and contribute to the dual-system collection scheme. It applies to all packaging placed on the German market. Importers acting as private-label brand owners are responsible. Non-registration creates significant fines and an import ban under §9 VerpackG.

In B2B context

For Indian palm leaf plate manufacturers shipping to Germany, VerpackG compliance sits with the German importer in the standard FOB India transaction, not with Ecodyne or another producer. However, when Ecodyne or another Indian manufacturer ships in custom packaging branded for the importer’s end customers, the importer is the producer under §3 VerpackG and must register with LUCID before placing the goods on the market. Penalties for non-registration include immediate sales suspension and fines per packaging unit placed on the market.

Practical implication for Ecodyne customers: when discussing custom packaging or private-label arrangements for the German market, the importer should confirm their LUCID number is active before the first container ships. The LUCID number must appear on the wholesale documentation and where applicable on the consumer-facing packaging itself. Ecodyne supplies VerpackG-conformant packaging specifications on request to support the importer’s compliance flow.
