Where Do Areca Palm Leaves Come From? How Palm Leaf Plates Are Sourced
Where areca palm leaves for plates come from, why no trees are cut, which regions grow them, when the leaves fall, who collects them, and how supply runs all year.
Palm leaf plates are made from the leaf sheath of the areca palm (Areca catechu), the tree grown in southern India for areca nut (betel nut). The sheath falls off the tree by itself, 6 to 8 times a year. Farmers collect the fallen sheaths from the ground. No tree is cut and nothing is taken from a living tree. Ecodyne’s leaf comes from 810 farming families in four districts of Karnataka, India.
Where do palm leaves for plates come from?
From areca palm plantations. The areca palm is a tall, slim palm grown as a cash crop for its nut. At the base of each leaf frond is a broad, stiff sheath that wraps the trunk. When the frond is spent, the sheath dries and drops to the ground. That fallen sheath is the raw material for every palm leaf plate, bowl and platter.
“Palm leaf plates” and “areca leaf plates” are the same product. “Palm leaf” is the common name; “areca” names the exact palm.
Are trees cut to make palm leaf plates?
No. Only sheaths that have already fallen are used. The tree keeps growing and fruiting for its full 30 to 40 year life. Making plates adds no new land, no new planting and no extra water: the palms are already grown for their nut, and the sheaths would otherwise be burned or left to rot.
Which countries grow areca palm?
Areca palm grows across tropical South and Southeast Asia, including India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. India is by far the largest grower, and almost all palm leaf plates sold worldwide are made in India. Ecodyne’s Industry Report 2026 puts India at about 62% of world areca cultivation and about 98% of global finished palm leaf plate exports.
Where in India do the leaves come from?
Mostly from the southern states, with Karnataka the largest. Ecodyne sources only from Karnataka: Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada and Chikmagalur districts.
How often does an areca palm shed its leaves?
An areca palm sheds 6 to 8 sheaths a year. Shedding goes on all year but peaks in the dry months after the monsoon, roughly November to May.
Who collects the leaves?
The farming families who grow the palms. Ecodyne works directly with 810 farming families across the four districts, under a seven-year programme with the Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI) that started in February 2019. Families gather fallen sheaths from the ground and bring them to one of 30 collection centres, each within 10 to 15 km of the villages it serves. Ecodyne pays a fixed rate per kilogram, reviewed every year, with no broker taking a cut. Payment records are reviewed in the annual amfori BSCI audit.
What happens after the leaves are collected?
Sheaths are sorted at the farm, taken to a collection centre, and sent to the nearest pressing unit. There they are washed in water, softened, heat-pressed at 200°C, dried for 24 hours at 60°C and passed under UV-C light. No chemicals, dyes, binders or coatings are used. The full process is on the manufacturing page.
What happens to leaves that are not good enough?
Damaged sheaths are sorted out at the farm and go back to the plantation soil as mulch. Of what reaches the factory, 15 to 17% is rejected and returned to the villages as cooking fuel or compost. Nothing from the collection chain goes to landfill.
How soon after collection are the leaves pressed?
It depends on the season. From November to May, when most sheaths fall, leaves reach a pressing unit 48 to 72 hours after collection. From June to November, pressing runs on dried leaf stored from the peak season, so a sheath can be 4 to 8 months old when it is pressed. The leaves are stored dry, with no chemical preservation or fumigation.
Can palm leaf supply run all year?
Yes, if the manufacturer stockpiles. Because most sheaths fall between November and May, Ecodyne builds a 4 to 6 month raw-leaf stockpile in the peak season and keeps 3 million+ finished pieces in stock. That is why a 40ft container can be loaded within 10 days in any month, including the monsoon.
Are palm leaf plates food safe?
Yes. The plate is one pressed leaf with nothing added. Ecodyne plates are tested to LFGB standards and confirmed compliant (tested by TÜV Rheinland) and meet EU Regulation 1935/2004 on food-contact materials. See certifications.
Can you wash and reuse palm leaf plates?
Palm leaf plates are made for single use, and we recommend using each plate only once. After use, put it in the compost or green waste: it breaks down in a home compost heap in about 2–4 months.
