BPI Compostable
BPI Compostable is the Biodegradable Products Institute (US) certification for products meeting ASTM D6400 (or D6868). It is the recognised mark for compostable claims in North America. Required by most municipal composting programmes that accept compostable serviceware. The label is widely referenced in US private-label retail and HoReCa procurement.
In B2B context
For US-bound B2B imports, BPI is the working compostability gatekeeper. Most municipal composting programmes that accept compostable serviceware use the BPI mark as their acceptance filter — without it, the product is typically rejected by the composting facility regardless of underlying biobased content. US federal procurement bid frameworks (GSA, state-level) reference BPI alongside USDA BioPreferred when specifying compostable disposables.
Palm leaf plates are rarely BPI-certified because palm leaf is a heat-pressed natural material that is not designed to meet ASTM D6400’s industrial-composting performance windows. For bagasse, PLA, and moulded-fibre alternatives, BPI is the working compliance baseline. EU buyers should not confuse BPI with EN 13432 — the standards reference different test geographies and certification bodies, although the underlying performance specifications overlap.
