Loi AGEC

Loi AGEC is France’s Anti-Waste Law for a Circular Economy (Loi n° 2020-105 of 10 February 2020). Phased over 2021–2026, it tightens rules on single-use items, compostability claims, EPR, and packaging. It is the most aggressive national-level eco-disposable regulation in the EU. Importers selling into France must comply across multiple touchpoints.

In B2B context

Loi AGEC has reshaped the French eco-disposable market more than any other national regulation in the EU. Phased clauses through 2026 progressively restrict single-use plastics, prohibit certain destruction practices, mandate reuse targets in foodservice, and tighten compostability and recyclability labelling. Importers and brand owners selling into France must verify clause-by-clause compliance for each SKU and packaging unit — not just at the product level, but at the marketing-claim level.

For palm leaf plates, Loi AGEC is broadly supportive: the product is non-plastic, made from a renewable agricultural by-product, and home-compostable in suitable conditions. The compliance work is concentrated in packaging (Loi AGEC tightens EPR and recyclability) and marketing claims (the law restricts “biodegradable” wording on consumer-facing labels). EU SUP Directive applies in parallel, but Loi AGEC adds national-level requirements stricter than the directive baseline.
