Areca leaf and palm leaf — the same product family

“Areca leaf plates” and “palm leaf plates” are co-equal names for one product — pressed from a single naturally fallen Areca catechu leaf. For the palm-leaf-named range, see our palm leaf plates page; for how the two terms relate, they describe the same single-material product with no difference in material or process.

Two product lines: Classic Line (standard finish) and Standard Line (premium A-grade finish).

How areca leaf plates are made — and how we prove it

Every plate and bowl is one pressed leaf, made in eight stages: collect naturally fallen areca leaves, grade, wash, soak, heat-press at 200°C, dry at 60°C for 24 hours, UV-sterilise, then inspect and pallet. No chemicals, dyes, glues or additives are used at any stage.

Compliance & sustainability

Because each item is a single natural material — pressed Areca catechu leaf with nothing added — it is straightforward to qualify for food-contact and single-use-plastic regimes. Ecodyne products are LFGB §30 §31 tested and certified ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and BSCI. EN 13432 compostability is in progress; USDA BioPreferred applies.

Why buyers specify areca leaf

  • Home and industrial compostable

Procurement notes

Frequently asked questions

What are areca leaf plates?

Areca leaf plates are single-piece foodservice plates pressed at 200°C from one naturally fallen leaf of the areca palm (Areca catechu), with no adhesives, dyes or coatings. They are also sold under the co-equal name palm leaf plates — the same product family.

What is the difference between areca and palm leaf plates?

There is no material difference: “areca leaf plates” and “palm leaf plates” are co-equal names for the same product — plates pressed from a naturally fallen areca-palm (Areca catechu) leaf. “Areca” is the botanically precise, India-origin term; “palm leaf” is the common export term. Both describe one single-material product.

Are areca leaf plates microwave safe?

Yes. Areca leaf plates are a single natural material with no plastic liner, coating or metallic ink, and tolerate microwave reheating and oven use to about 200°C for short periods — the same temperature at which the leaf is pressed during manufacture. They are also freezer-safe.

How are areca leaf plates made?

In eight stages: collect naturally fallen areca leaves, grade, wash, soak, heat-press at 200°C, dry at 60°C for 24 hours, UV-sterilise, then inspect and pallet. No chemicals, dyes, glues or additives are added at any stage — the plate is a single pressed leaf.

Are areca leaf plates biodegradable and compostable?

Areca leaf plates are 100% natural single-material items that break down in home and industrial composting. They contain no plastic, PFAS or coatings. EN 13432 certification is in progress; test documentation is available to qualified buyers on request.

Areca leaf plates vs bagasse — which is better?

Areca leaf plates are pressed from a single naturally fallen leaf with no binders. Bagasse plates are moulded from a sugarcane-fibre slurry that requires starch binders and, in some products, PFAS sizing. Areca is a single-material product with nothing to migration-test beyond the leaf; both compost under EN 13432 conditions.
