Disposable Serving Platters — Pressed Areca Palm Leaf

A disposable serving platter is a large, shallow serving form used once to present and hand out food, then composted or discarded rather than washed. Ecodyne Tableware presses disposable serving platters from naturally fallen areca palm leaf sheaths in Karnataka, India, and ships them by the container to distributors, private-label brands and foodservice wholesalers. The material is tested to LFGB Section 30/31 by TÜV Rheinland, EN 13432 tested — PASS, amfori BSCI audited and USDA BioPreferred compliant.

What is a disposable serving platter?

A disposable serving platter is a large, shallow serving form used once, designed to carry food to the point of service rather than to an individual diner. That is the working distinction from a plate: the plate belongs to the guest, the platter belongs to the service. Platters sit on buffets, on show-cooking stations and on counters, and are re-loaded several times during a service.

Pressed from areca palm leaf, the platter carries heavier and wetter loads without flexing, because the sheath is compacted at 200°C into a sheet roughly one millimetre thick. No coating, binder or dye is added at any stage.

What is the difference between a serving platter and a serving tray?

A serving platter presents food and is usually placed down for guests to help themselves; a serving tray carries items and is usually held or carried. In practice the terms overlap and most suppliers use them interchangeably, so the specification that matters when buying is not the word but the dimensions, the rim height and the load the piece is rated to take.

Ecodyne makes flat platters with a low rim and compartment trays with three to five sections. For individual portions the equivalents are palm leaf plates and, in German, Servierplatten Einweg.

Which sizes and formats are available?

Rectangular and oval platters run roughly 20 to 35 cm in length, with square formats and compartment trays alongside them; the binding article list is confirmed with the quotation. All formats can be mixed in a single container.

Disposable serving platters — common formats
Format Typical size Typical use
Rectangular platter approx. 20–35 cm long Finger food, charcuterie, pastries, sushi
Oval platter approx. 25–35 cm long Grilled food, fish, carved meats
Square platter approx. 20–25 cm Cheese, antipasti, presentation
Compartment tray 3 to 5 sections Canteen service, event catering, delivery

Bowls for wet components are covered on the German category page Einwegschalen; the material page for the leaf itself is Palmblattteller.

How rigid are palm leaf platters when loaded?

A loaded palm leaf platter can be carried without folding in the middle, because the pressed fibre is about a millimetre thick rather than a sheet of thin board. This is the practical difference on a buffet that is re-loaded for two hours: uncoated card softens under warm, oily food, and coated card needs a plastic or PLA barrier to avoid it.

Board platters are lighter, print freely and pack far flatter in a container. Where a printed promotional run is the requirement, board is the right choice and palm leaf is not — the leaf is neither dyed nor printed. The material comparison is set out in palm leaf versus paper plates.

How are disposable serving platters disposed of?

Uncoated palm leaf platters are EN 13432 tested — PASS and therefore industrially compostable, with the bin allocation set by the local waste authority. Because there is no plastic layer, nothing has to be separated before disposal — which is the point at which coated board and aluminium platters differ, since neither belongs in organic waste.

Whoever places the goods on the market carries the packaging obligation in the destination country. Ecodyne supplies the packaging-technical data needed to file those registrations with every shipment.

How do buyers order platters by the container?

Platters are bought ex works by the 40ft high-cube container, which holds roughly 300,000 to 350,000 pieces in a freely chosen article mix and can combine platters with plates, bowls and compartment trays. Loading is completed within 10 working days of order confirmation against a 1% per day delay penalty; the standard term is FOB New Mangalore Port (INMAA) under Incoterms 2020.

How a distributor sets up that procurement is described in HoReCa Wholesale Eco Tableware, and the caterer view in Plates for Catering Wholesale. Quotations for a specific article mix are prepared on request.

Frequently asked questions about disposable serving platters

What is a disposable serving platter?

A disposable serving platter is a large, shallow serving form used once to present and hand out food. It is bigger and flatter than a plate and belongs to the service rather than to an individual guest.

What is the difference between a serving platter and a serving tray?

A platter presents food and is usually set down; a tray carries items and is usually held. The terms overlap in trade use, so specify dimensions, rim height and load rather than relying on the word.

Are palm leaf platters strong enough for a full load?

The pressed fibre is roughly one millimetre thick, so a loaded platter can be carried without folding. For very heavy loads the smaller formats are the safer choice.

Are the platters suitable for hot food?

Yes. Palm leaf carries hot food without melting or shedding a coating, because it is uncoated and the material was already pressed at 200°C. It is not intended for sustained baking.

Can platters be printed or branded?

The leaf itself is neither dyed nor printed, so branding is applied to the packaging and cartoning. Private-label arrangements are agreed in the quotation.

Are compartment trays part of the same range?

Yes. Compartment trays with three to five sections are made from the same material and can be mixed with platters in a single container.

How are the platters disposed of?

Uncoated palm leaf is EN 13432 tested — PASS and industrially compostable. The bin allocation follows the local waste authority, and no material separation is needed because there is no plastic layer.

What is the minimum order?

One 40ft high-cube container, roughly 300,000 to 350,000 pieces in a freely chosen article mix.
