Materials (4)

  • Palm leaf plateA disposable plate pressed under heat from a naturally fallen Areca catechu palm leaf. No chemicals, dyes, additives or coatings — the leaf itself is the substrate.
  • BagasseThe dry pulpy fibrous residue left after sugarcane stalks are crushed for juice extraction. Pressed into moulded-fibre plates and bowls.
  • PLA (polylactic acid)A bioplastic polymer derived from corn or sugarcane starch via fermentation. Used in compostable cutlery, cups and lining films.
  • Areca catechuThe botanical name of the areca palm — the species whose naturally fallen leaves are pressed into palm leaf disposable tableware across India.

  • EN 13432The European standard for industrial compostability of packaging. Specifies disintegration, biodegradation, ecotoxicity and heavy-metal thresholds.
  • ASTM D6400The North American industrial-compostability standard for plastics and packaging. The technical basis for BPI Compostable certification.
  • USDA BioPreferredUSDA programme identifying and labelling products derived from renewable biological resources. Palm leaf plates qualify at greater than 95% biobased content.
  • ISO 9001:2015The international standard for quality management systems. Certifies the manufacturer’s quality processes — not the product itself. Required by most EU procurement.
  • ISO 14001:2015The international standard for environmental management systems. Certifies operational practice on energy, water, waste and emissions.
  • OK Compost HomeTÜV Austria certification for materials proven to compost in home (ambient-temperature) conditions. Stricter than EN 13432. Required for home-compostable claims in France.
  • BPI CompostableBiodegradable Products Institute (US) certification for products meeting ASTM D6400 or D6868. The recognised mark for compostable claims in North America.
  • BSCIBusiness Social Compliance Initiative — the European-led social-audit framework for manufacturer working conditions. Audited every two years by accredited bodies.

Regulations (8)

  • LFGB §30 §31Sections 30 and 31 of Germany’s Lebensmittel- und Futtermittelgesetzbuch — the legal basis for food-contact material safety testing required for German market entry.
  • EU 1935/2004Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 on materials and articles intended to come into contact with food. The umbrella EU framework that LFGB and other national rules implement.
  • Loi AGECFrance’s Anti-Waste Law for a Circular Economy. The most aggressive national-level eco-disposable regulation in the EU. Importers selling into France must comply.
  • VerpackungsgesetzGermany’s Packaging Act, requiring producers and importers acting as producers to register with the LUCID register and contribute to the dual-system collection scheme.
  • EU SUP DirectiveDirective (EU) 2019/904 on single-use plastics. Bans listed plastic items, requires marking, EPR. Palm leaf plates are non-plastic and sit outside the SUP scope.
  • LUCID registerThe mandatory German central packaging register. All producers and importers placing packaging on the German market must register and report quantities.
  • CITEOThe French extended-producer-responsibility scheme for household packaging. Importers selling consumer-facing packaging into France must register and pay eco-contribution fees.
  • EPR schemeExtended Producer Responsibility — the policy framework requiring producers (or importers acting as producers) to fund end-of-life management of their packaging. Active across the EU.

  • Migration testingLaboratory testing measuring whether substances transfer from a food-contact material into food. The basis for LFGB §30 §31 reports and EU 1935/2004 compliance.
  • CPCRIThe Central Plantation Crops Research Institute — ICAR-affiliated research body shaping cultivation practice for India’s areca sector. Guides Ecodyne’s 810-farming-family network.
  • CompostableA material that breaks down into water, CO2, biomass and inorganic compounds under defined composting conditions, leaving no toxic residue. Test standards: EN 13432, ASTM D6400, OK Compost Home.
  • BiodegradableA material that breaks down through biological processes into smaller compounds. Vague compared to the certifiable “compostable” claim. Increasingly restricted under EU regulation.

  • MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity)The minimum order a manufacturer accepts. For palm leaf plate exports from India, the standard is 1×40-foot High Cube container per order.
  • FCL / 40ft HCFull Container Load in a 40-foot High Cube container. The standard freight unit for palm leaf B2B exports from India. 100,000-300,000 plates per FCL depending on SKU mix.
  • IncotermsInternational Chamber of Commerce trade terms (FOB, CFR, CIF, DAP, DDP, etc.) defining who pays for freight, insurance and customs at each stage.
  • FOB (Free On Board)An Incoterms 2020 trade term where seller’s responsibility ends at the named port of shipment. Typical ports: Chennai, Tuticorin, Cochin, Mangalore.
  • CIF (Cost, Insurance & Freight)An Incoterms 2020 trade term where the seller pays cost, insurance and freight to the named destination port. Common for first-time buyers.
  • CFR (Cost & Freight)An Incoterms 2020 trade term where the seller pays cost and freight but buyer arranges insurance. Common for established importers with their own marine cover.
  • HSN code 4602.19The Harmonised System Nomenclature code most commonly applied to palm leaf disposable tableware imports under chapter 46, heading 4602.
  • HoReCaHotels, Restaurants and Cafés — the food-service end-channel for eco-disposable tableware. A primary B2B demand segment for palm leaf plates, cups, bowls and serving platters.
